I broke down and finally setup a facebook account - if you search leifthelucky@gmai.com you'll probably find me. Not sure why, just seemed like a good idea at the time heh.

God I hate midterms and finals.

Life goes on... Jul. 28th, 2007 @ 09:17 pm
One more month of freedom and then 8 more months of joyous study of the laws of nature (as we know them).

Wheeeee

I miss my cat.

Poor kitty cat... Jul. 5th, 2007 @ 11:31 am
Well the vet phoned back yesterday with the lab results, apparently my cat has both a hyperactive metabolism, and liver failure. There isn't much we can do, we could change his diet, and try to treat the hyperactive thing, but in the end it'll only buy a little more time. He'll still lose weight too. So this monday I am having him put down by the vet. It sucks :(

Zork! Jul. 3rd, 2007 @ 01:00 pm
Not much exciting....the federal government was positive I didn't exist, had to go and fix that misconception....changed guilds on trumble....got a job...took cat to vet, hopefully we can find out why said feline is losing weight so rapidly....about it.

Spring has come! May. 4th, 2007 @ 02:55 pm
Yes it's been a while since I've updated, I tend to forget all about LJ for months, then come back post something, then forget about it...etc

It's a vicious cycle, what can I say.

That said, lets see here. My rogue on whisperwind is level 70 now and has some nice gear. His armory link: http://armory.worldofwarcraft.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Whisperwind&n=Trumble

It sure is different going from a raiding priest to a raiding rogue, in many ways it's much less stressful. If you screw up, generally you die but little else happens. People still yell at you in vent though hehe.

Somewhat unsure of WoW these days though, while I am in a position to raid and do some of the upper level content much of it seems like it will be more and more exclusive. To me it seems like Blizzard is doing this to hold off guilds from mowing through their content so they can focus their attention on the next expansion.

First year college is complete! Decent grades, could have done better but overall I am quite happy. Can't wait for second year.

My rogue is level 63 now, and I've decided to forgo WoW till weekends because frankly it's killing me staying up to the wee hours of the morning to try to level the little guy. It's kinda hard to have a full course load and still be able to devote several hours a day to WoW.

I curse blizzard for not releasing TBC during my nice LONG christmas break *shakes fist*. Oh well eventually I'll get there.
» Back in college...
Term 2, Year 1.

Several of the same professors in the same courses (physics, math), some new ones. The chemistry professor seems like an interesting lecturer and the second term of chemistry seems a lot more interesting than the first one was.

The compsci course though, ye gods man. Propositional Logic? Truth tables? SOMEBODY SAVE ME. We won't even mention english.

Well hello from Ucluelet BC. I've only been up here less than a week and already miss my cable internet! *sniff* Been working at a fish processing plant for a few days now (on a day off, thank the gods). It's an eye opening experience, never having worked in a plant before. The work isn't really hard per say, pulling out fish guts or packing frozen fillets into bags doesn't require much in the way of heavy lifting. It is tiring though - the shifts are 10 hours long. The killer is the fact you're standing on your feet all day long. Insoles make a big difference here.

Gets better after a week or so I'am told. Can't wait till payday - iPod here I come (;

Thats all for now, I'll put up some pictures when I get back in a few weeks, I have no place to host them right now, and no real way to upload them if I did (can you say dial up?)
» It's only been 5 minutes!
Relatively speaking anyway. I just had a sudden unexplainable desire to update my 2 cents. Sometime around December the great evil known as World of Warcraft took over. I've played MUD's before, so I thought I knew what I was getting into.

I did not. The purty environments, the awesome potential each character has...it overwhelms you. Sucks you right in. In any event I seem to have surfaced a tad. Hope to brush off the dust on my projects. Not too mention the intriguing possibility of making some WoW movies. I wonder what kind of stuff you could do with some basic compositing, some simple additions...

*shudder*

So it's been a while since I've posted here. But that's normal. One should view steady postings here from me as a sign I am in need of instant medical attention! Honest. Anyhow, I've been having fun with my uber leet new system, after getting one stick of 512 megs of pc3200 ddr ram replaced due to errors things looked good. I was happy, memtest was happy, the computer was happy, the world was happy.

2 Months later I start getting weird errors again. Blue screens for no apparent reason, etc. Cold chills raced along my veins as I realized "This smells like either burnt tomatoes, or my RAM is bad". After confirming the tomatoes were not burned (merely fossilized) I ran memtest again.

Much to my chagrin I had errors in sticks 1 (495 megs), massive, horrible, ugly errors. So I hauled out the first stick in hopes that stick 2 was A-OK, but no dear readers, such was not the case. Stick 2 was DOA at 240 megs. Tore that out, slapped in stick 1 (hey 495 megs is better than 240, right?) and ran memtest again.

Zip, nada. That stick was error free baby.

This would be a good time to utter those beloved words "WHAT THE FRAGGLE?" But t'is true. Stick one is not only error free in memtest, but stable.

So I e-mail ncix.com (those fine folks I bought this stuff from) and after conversing with them over this odd bit of news I got an RMA for the ram, the motherboard AND the CPU. NCIX.com has good service, but the bad news is my precious baby will be in pain till I get the replacement parts. I'll be forced to sustain my habit on my old weary 1.3 ghz duron.

*deep sigh*

And now back to that eerie silence y'all have become so comfortable with.
» I have found it! Eureka!
Ok ok, so I'm no ancient Greek math whiz trying to figure out how to determine the purity of some gold crown, but still, the mouthpiece seems to be done. It can sort of be seen in the image, though I admit the angle doesn't show the entire masterwork ;-) Should show a small wireframe image of the recorder's mouthpiece model. The entire mess is 3 or 4 point polygons. A nice, relatively clean mesh that can (and is - though hard to see) be sub patched (aka NURB-fied :). That just means that it can easily be made into a smoother, curvier higher res model with the touch of a button. It wasn't easy, basically I wound up having to use splines (curvy lines) as guides while I hand drew in polygons. Then tweaked.......and tweaked.........and tweaked.... This should be the hardest of the three parts.
» The joy, the joy.
>>>Rant mode: ON Carving holes in objects is what boolean operations is all about. But if you do that, then you are left with a mesh full of > 4 point polygons. This sounds pretty acceptable until you realize that in Lightwave, you cannot metaform (NURBify) meshes with polygons that have > 4 points. Why the heck doesn't the boolean tool think smarter. Who the heck wants > 4 point poly meshes fer crying out loud! So carving out the holes in my recorder model is proving difficult. My method of attack is to make a stencil, boolean that, clean up the mesh, then try to smooth shift the resulting geometry. What a pain. >>>Rand mode: OFF we now return you to your regularly scheduled programming.
» Poly was a gon'in away...
Well the recorder is coming along nicely. I tried using spline cages and then patching that with the autopatcher tool, but that didn't go well. No not at all, so I hand drew in the polygons using the splines as guides.

Still it was worth it (thank goodness the mouthpiece isn't made of that many polys).

wireframe of recorder mouth - if you don't see anything, webserver is down :)

It needs some tweaking, but still. Yay.
» This here's my boom stick......er not not.
Well added a picture, changed the style settings, looks better I think. Note, if my website is down, that's because I turn off my server at night. So if ye get nada, well now you know why :)

In other news I'm getting back into 3d modelling with a small project: My new recorder. It's not too difficult, basically it's a lathe with some boolean operations. The trick will be to cut so you don't get weird stuff.

Yes weird stuff, that's a technical term!

Well it's been a while. Upgraded my computer from a 1.3 ghz duron to a 1.8(something) ghz xp+ (a 2500). Had to RMA one of the ram sticks, but it all works now. Yippiee. Course that was 3 or 4 weeks ago.

Also have a new recorder, this an alto.

Picture is a little fuzzy, but eh. http://www.leifthelucky.com/gallery/photos/ace

it's a yamaha 314BII and it sounds very, very nice. All I need to do now is practice a bit more than I have been.

Here is a shot of some critter eating another critter.

(last three)

I know, I know 2 posts in one day (something is wrong). Still I got a couple of nice insect shots here. A wasp just getting ready to take off from a flower, and a bee that just did. The bee isn't quite as nice a shot as the wasp, but eh.

The trick I found was to use continous shooting (a shutter setting on the a70) it's kinda tricky to get the hang of getting the right focus before shooting a pile of shots....but when it works, it works great.

Plus you get a shot of a strawberry! A real honest to goodness strawberry.

a funny little quote from IRC (irc.distributed.net/ #distributed)

[13:34] * Nugget finally calls geico and tells them that he's moved. $40 savings every six months.
[13:36] Great news guys! <#distributed> We finished RC5-72? No, but I saved a bunch on my car insurance with Geico!
